Our Products

We believe that what goes into their bellies goes into ours.  We also believe that a humane, stress-free and loving environment complete with regular daily back and snout scratches makes for healthier and happier animals which of course is better for us too:)

Our Pork

We really did our homework!  When we were starting out and deciding what breed of pigs to raise, after much research we decided on the Heritage breed, "Large Black" because they are a totally amazing, grazing pig!  A growing Large Black pig can glean up to half of his requirements from pasture while producing a better tasting, healthier pork than one raised strictly on grain.

KUNE KUNE pigs!!  As our little farm grew and the Large Blacks helped us with so much clearing, more and more grass pasture has been becoming available.  Soooo...we decided to start breeding Kune Kunes in the Summer of 2019.

Kunes are the closest you'll get to "grass fed pork".  Their snouts are very short --they're kinda like the "pugs" of the pig world-- and  so they are incapable of tearing up the ground like other pig breeds do.  Everywhere they go it literally looks like someone’s mowed the grass!  They are completely adorable and good natured.  Another Heritage breed originally from New Zealand, they're known as the pigs that smile back!  They make fantastic pets if they’ve got companions and room to roam.

Our pigs are rotationally grazed meaning that when they've foraged their area clean, they're moved to a new space where they can start all over.

Hearty and sustainable and because of their small size don’t require as much feed as other breeds as long as they have lots of grass. Our pigs don’t grow as quickly as commercially raised pigs do because they have more room to roam, get more exercise and eat a more natural diet.  Our guys are supplemented with Island-produced NON-GMO feed to ensure that all of their daily nutritional needs are met.  In the Winter when there's less grass available, they're also given grass hay and Alfalfa mash to supplement their diets.  And don't forget the abundance of fruit and veggies when they're in season and available:)

"Grass Fed Pork” like grass fed beef is higher in the omegas.  With a richer flavour, this pork is something you just can’t buy at the big grocery stores.  Known as another breed of “lard pig”, Kune meat is dark, well marbled, tender, juicy and full of flavour!

The lard, or fat, of a pasture raised pig has a similar fatty acid composition to coconut oil but is even better.  With a high concentration (48%) of monounsaturated fats, high levels of Oleic acid and high levels of Choline, its great flavour is secondary to its heart health benefits.  Also, unlike most vegetable oils, lard has a high (375F) smoke point which means it's ideal for frying, sautéing and baking as it won't oxidize while cooking.

Pasture lard is sustainable, leaves a smaller carbon footprint than vegetable or imported oils and is packed with a whopping 1000iu of Vitamin D per Tablespoon!!  Not to mention that it's loaded with Vitamins A, K and the Omegas!

Our hams and bacon are cured without the use of any Nitrates.  100% NITRATE FREE!!  This means that the same great flavour is there without the "nasties".  It also means that they should be kept frozen until ready to use and eaten within a few days of thawing as it's the Nitrates that make meat last for so long refrigerated.  We believe that it's a small price to pay for the healthier alternative.  And, we've put so much care and attention into raising them as healthfully and naturally as possible, that we don't want to ruin the end product with un-digestible synthetics.

Our Meat and Poultry are professionally processed, inspected, cut, wrapped, and frozen at a federally licensed slaughterhouse facility.  We sell our Pork and Goat by the cut or by the side (pre-ordered).

Our Poultry and EGGS

With the exception of our French type Heritage meat chickens that we get as day-olds, all of the poultry we raise and sell was hatched right here and raised under momma's wings:)

Our beautiful Muscovy Ducks!  Living free range and happy, foraging and supplemented with non-gmo, non-medicated high quality feed to make sure they're healthy and happy.  No medications or antibiotics.  They produce HUGE tasty eggs that are easily twice the size of a large chicken egg...and almost all yolk!  Great for baking as they make everything richer and fluffier than what you're used to.  These delicious Duck eggs are every bit as good for you as chicken eggs, and many claim even more so.  Their meat is dark, lean and "meatier" than most poultry.  Eating a Muscovy duck breast is not unlike eating a Sirloin steak.  Muscovy meat is also not greasy like other duck meat is, although the drippings are a fantastic treat!  We love slow roasting a Muscovy duck atop a bed of potatoes, onions and mushrooms....The potatoes cooked in the duck fat are sensational!  And the broth made from the bones is the base of the best Squash soup we've ever had:)

Our Guinea Fowl are hilarious!  They are much like a game bird in that they're small and have dark flavourful meat.  They're fun to watch, hear and have around and they're renowned for being the first to sound the alarms if anything comes near or seems "abnormal".  It made so much sense to add them to our farm because their other claim to fame is that they love to feast on any mites, lice, ticks and fleas they can find--making life easier for the rest of our critters!

We don't let our Turkeys get super huge.  Our biggest have weighed in around twelve pounds and the smallest around 6lbs.  We find them to be more tender than bigger birds and they're perfect for those who love Turkey but don't need twenty pounds of it:)

With the exception of our pigs, all of our birds and goats are locked up every night for their own protection and let loose every day to roam wherever they please.  It's not uncommon to see them in the shade of the forest, hanging out in the pasture and sometimes even looking in our windows or hanging out on the roof!

      OUR SOAPS AND CREAMS

We believe that lard is a sustainable soap and cream making  ingredient with a much smaller carbon footprint than other skin care ingredients and that we are honouring our animals by using all the animal has to offer and not letting ANYTHING go to waste.

Lard can be a controversial ingredient in soap making.

Some are put off by the idea of "animal by-products" in their skin care products.  What most people don't realize is that many commercially prepared skin care products DO contain some kind of animal fat along with a host of other ingredients that are almost impossible to pronounce.  Our all natural soaps and creams have very few ingredients and they're all easy to read.

Some are concerned that animal fat will make their soap greasy and clog pores.  Actually, it is quite the contrary!  When it comes to cellular makeup, lard is incredibly close to human skin.  Lard has a similar pH to that of human skin, and it is made up of both saturated and monounsaturated fats which means that lard soap and creams are closer to our skin's composition  than plant-based soaps or creams.  Lard soap is wonderfully creamy and will condition and moisturize your skin like no other soap.

DID YOU KNOW that lard was used for skincare long before "Cosmetology" became a thing?  That's right!  Since lard is so similar to our own skin's oils, it's really perfect to be used in skincare products:)

WHY?  Well....you don't need to look very long or far for information on all the tremendous ways lard can help our skin and why it makes such an amazing cream.

Firstly, oil dissolves oil.  As a cleanser, it's a gentle and natural way to rid your face of sebum buildup and daily dirt that clogs pores.  Because lard is so similar to the natural oils our skin produces, your body knows that it doesn't need to over produce oils like it tends to do when you're using other ingredients that dry out your skin.

Since lard is so high in Vitamin D, it only makes sense that we're soaking all of that up when we apply it to our skin.  Lard is also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin E and Vitamin A that give us that healthy glowing skin we all crave.

But here's the really fun stuff!  Lard can:

  • Even out complexion and skin colour, reduce redness and minimize dark spots, lines and wrinkles and reduce signs of aging

  • promote collagen production, tone and firm skin and improve elasticity

  • even out texture for smoother, softer feeling skin

  • reduce acne

  • reduce inflammation and help treat eczema and psoriasis

  • help treat rosacea

  • reduce dryness as it's an exceptional barrier for locking in moisture

  • reduce the size of pores

  • help heal wounds, burns and appearance of scars

Our Lard soaps and creams are hand crafted from all natural ingredients:  Our lard, of course, floral waters and essential oils.  All our creams also contain Aloe Vera and vegetable based emulsifying wax and stearic acid.

Our "Plain" soap and cream is 100% lard and mostly un-scented with just a hint of ginger.

Our "Clean" soap and cream is 100% lard and has a crisp clean aroma stemming from floral waters of Tulsi, Rose and Rose Geranium.  Essential oils of Palmarosa, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Carrot seed are also in the mix.

Now, let's talk COTTONWOOD!

Cottonwood, part of the Salix family of plants (like White Willow) produces tons of buds every Spring.  These buds produce a sticky resin that is a very rich source of Salicin.  Salicin is the precursor of Salicylic Acid which is used to make Aspirin.

Salicin hosts a plethora of medicinal benefits as well as beneficial properties for the skin and is actually known to be a skin healer and regenerator with its anti-aging qualities.  It has Aspirin-like anti-inflammatory properties, helping reduce redness and calm inflammation.

Cottonwood bud resin also possesses a long, impressive list of additional healing compounds including polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, antioxidants and antimicrobrial compounds.   It's effective in helping heal eczema and scalp psoriasis.  It also helps prevent/reduce bruising, helps soothe bug bites and itchy rashes, helps relieve sunburn and along with its antiseptic qualities can help heal minor scrapes, cuts and burns.

I consider that all this, mixed with its heady, woody incense like scent, makes it another of the many gifts Mother Nature bestowed upon us!

Every Spring, I pick as many Cottonwood buds as I can get my hands on and seal them in jars with Grapeseed oil and let that infuse for a year before incorporating that liquid gold in to my soaps and creams.

Our "Cottonwood" soap is 50% lard mixed with Castor oil and a Cottonwood oil blend that was made right here!  With floral waters of Peppermint, Ylang Ylang and Lemongrass (also in our Cottonwood cream), it smells DIVINE!

All of our soaps can double as shampoo bars that will leave your hair feeling soft and clean.   I also use them when making my laundry detergent.

I like to refer to my creams as the "one stop shop" as they are so versatile and literally do everything you would normally need many different products for, like:

  • Body cleanser

  • Body cream

  • Facial cleanser

  • Daily facial moisturizer

  • Face mask

  • Make up remover
